CHILLICOTHE – Covington’s senior Day’Lynn Garrett and junior Filip McMaken qualified for state by finishing in the top four of their individual competitions at the Regional meet.

Day’Lynn Garrett finished first in the 300 meter hurdles and third in the 110 meter hurdles, while Filip McMaken finished third in the high jump.

On Wednesday in the prelims, Day’Lynn Garrett set the school record in the 300 meter hurdles with a time of 38.51. The previous 300 meter hurdles record was set by Cade Harshbarger when he placed third at state with the time of 38.91 in 2018.

Then, on Friday, Day’Lynn broke the school record once again in the finals of the 300 meter hurdles with the time of 38.33 as he won the regional tournament to advance to state. He also advanced to state by finishing third in the 110 meter hurdles with the time of 15.02.

At this point of Day’Lynn’s career, he has tied the legendary athlete Kelly Deeter with three school records in boys track. Kelly Deeter, a state champion and three-time state runner-up, holds the school records in the 100 meter dash (10.8) in 1984, the 200 meter dash (21.7) in 1984 and the 4×100 meter relay (43.88) with Kevin Finfrock, Phil Reck and Scott Winks in 1981. Day’Lynn Garrett holds the records in the long jump (21′ 4.5″) in 2025, the 110 meter hurdles (14.71) in 2025 and the 300 meter hurdles (38.33) this year. As a senior, Day’Lynn has opportunities to reset his own records at the state meet.

Filip McMaken, a outstanding athlete as a junior, advanced to state by finishing third in the high jump with the height of 6-01.00. Filip has worked extremely hard throughout the past year in athletic training and his advance to the state tournament is a reward for how much time he put in to progress himself.

The Buccs also competed in the 4×100, 4×200 and 4×400 meter relays, but came up short of advancing to state. As a team, the Buccaneers finished eighth out of 38 teams with 28 points.

In girls track, freshman Emma Havenar had a great year as she advanced to the regional meet, but she came up short advancing to state in the 300 meter hurdles. Due to her work ethic, Emma has future opportunities for success.
