SEASON PREVIEW The Covington Buccaneers enter the 2024 season with aspirations of capturing a third straight TRC Championship.
“We graduated four starters last season so this is kind of a rebuilding year for us,” said Covington coach Bill Wise. “Fortunately, we have two really talented returnees in Matt Dieperink and Brodie Manson that will anchor our team and provide leadership for the younger guys.”
Matt Dieperink earned first-team league honors a year ago and Brodie Manson was a key contributor to the success of the Buccaneers finishing unbeaten in the TRC.
The key for Covington to continue its success is the development of the rest of the roster.
“Juniors Jaden Wackler and Caleb Smith finally decided to join the golf team and will have an immediate impact along with another new addition, sophomore Brairen Denson,” Wise said. “Returning golfers Jackson Hollis, Caden Hollingsworth, and Gavin Clark have shown improvement from last year and will challenge for a spot on the varsity roster. Sophomore newcomers Phillip Swabb and Trent Reynolds have been working hard and are beginning to show signs of improvement. Finn Rogers, our lone freshman, has a strong game and could potentially see time on varsity this season.”
There are some tough teams in the TRC, which will give the Buccaneers huge challenges.
“I know Bethel is returning a bunch this year,” Wise stated. “We will have to play well this season to defend our league title, but we are capable of bringing the championship home again.”
