COVINGTON – Covington struggled shutting down Riverside’s offense, which led to a frustrating 73-57 defeat on a night where the Buccaneer seniors played their final game on the home floor.

In the last two games where the Buccaneers were able to record wins, the defensive effort gave both teams difficult situations to score points on a consistent basis. Unfortunately, tonight Covington didn’t play at a high level at the defensive end and Riverside was able to take advantage by scoring so many points in all four periods.

The Pirates opened up the game with a 24-19 lead in the first period and much of it was due to five wide open three-pointers that went through the bottom of the net.

Riverside pushed its lead to 38-30 at the break by outscoring the Buccs 14-11 in the second period.

The Buccaneers fans were hoping to see the players make an adjustment in the second half, but that never materialized because Riverside continued to drop in big shots throughout the entire second half.

Riverside pushed its lead to 55-44 at the end of the third and then outscored Covington 18-13 in the final frame to hand the Buccaneers a 16-point loss.

Overall, Covington connected on 13 two-point shots, nine three-pointers and made only four out of eight free throws. Riverside put in 16 two-point buckets, nine three-pointers and connected on 14 out of 22 free throw attempts.

The loss drops Covington’s record to 6-15 overall and 0-13 in the TRC. The Buccaneers have just one more opportunity to capture a win in the league as they face Miami East on the road next Tuesday.
