COVINGTON – The Covington Buccaneers captured a 59-43 win over Tri-County North, which hopefully leads to more success throughout the remainder of the season.
“It was a good night for Covington Basketball,” said Covington coach Logan Carey, who is putting together youth development for future success. “We had 82 kids kindergarten through second grade, Mini-Buccs, there for our game, so it was nice to play as well as we did. It’s nice to give a big crowd something to cheer about.”
Unfortunately, the Buccaneers haven’t won a game yet in the TRC, but they are now 5-2 in non-league games. That shows just how tough things are in the league matchups, which hopefully prepares the Buccaneers for post-season success.
On Saturday against Tri-County North, the Buccaneers started off fast by building a 20-9 lead after one. Brogen Angle set the tone offensively by scoring 10 of his game-high 22 points in the opening frame.
“We were aggressive offensively at times, sometimes too aggressive and chucking too many quick threes,” Carey explained. “It was a good showing though, overall. I’m proud of our guys tonight.”
The next two periods were tight, but Covington was able to hold a 33-19 lead at the break and a 43-29 lead at the end of the third.
The Buccaneers closed out the game by outscoring the Panthers 16-14 in the fourth to preserve an impressive 16-point victory.
“Defensively we seemed to be locked in,” Carey said. “We rebounded extremely well and did a better job contesting shots without fouling.”
The way the Buccaneers played tonight had an impact on the youngsters who were on hand to witness the victory.
“Our guys put a lot of work in with our 82 Covington students too,” explained Carey. “They showed up every Wednesday and led drills and developed relationships with our youth. All the kids involved in our youth program and our high school program have done a great job and are great kids. I’m lucky to be a part of it.”
Next up for the Buccaneers is another non-conference game at Newton on February 4th.
