COVINGTON – The Covington Buccaneers suffered another unfortunate loss on Tuesday in a 49-46 loss to Milton-Union on the home floor to drop to 1-5 on the season.

For the fourth time in the five losses, the Buccaneers were in position to capture a win, but came up short due to missed opportunities where the ball bounced off the rim.

“Our guys are tired of being close,” said Covington coach Logan Carey. “Tired of doing enough to be in games, but not enough to win them. I felt like we rebounded a heck of a lot better. (Landin) Cassel and Brant (Angle) had break out games. Just need to get all guys rolling on the same night.”

The game was tight from start to finish, but Milton-Union was able to hold on to a slim lead throughout the majority of the game. The Bulldogs led 11-10 after one and 24-20 at the break despite trailing 17-16 midway through the second. They pushed their lead to 37-31 heading into the fourth and held down the stretch on for a three-point win.

“I’m going to need to take a look in the mirror, because I need to figure out how to turn this thing around,” Carey said. “I know we’ve got hungry guys that want it. We’ve been stacking together great practices. I’ve got to be better at getting us where we need to be and getting the guys into positions to succeed.”

Coach Carey did put his team in so many positions to win on Tuesday and the players executed well offensively by getting open looks at the basket inside the paint and from longer range. Unfortunately, so many shots bounced off the rim. That has been the downfall for the Buccaneers in the majority of the losses so far this season.

Fortunately, despite being 1-5, the Buccaneers have opportunities to turn things around soon.

Next up is a road game at Lehman on Friday.
