The Covington Buccaneers dropped two games on back-to-back nights this weekend with losses at Miami East and Mississinawa Valley.
On Friday, the Buccaneers lost to the Vikings 54-43 and the second quarter was the time frame that put the team into trouble. Covington played well early by scoring 17 points in the first quarter, but the Buccaneers failed to score.a point in the second frame until just under three minutes left in the half. Overall, the Buccaneers were outscored 15-4 in the second frame with the four points coming on a free throw and a three-pointer by Kent Welborn.
Even though the Buccaneers trailed 34-21 at the half, they showed some determination.by hanging up with the Vikings throughout the second half. Covington outscored the Vikings 8-7 in the third period and 14-13 in the fourth. It wasn’t enough to overcome the unfortunate second quarter that led to the 11-point defeat.
On Saturday against Mississinawa Valley, the Buccaneers built a 29-27 lead at the half, but struggled throughout the entire second half with just 10 points. The final quarter was the biggest disappointment as Mississinawa Valley outscored Covington 18-4.
“Rebounding killed us,” Logan Carey mentioned. “One of our goals is to win the rebound battle and we haven’t done it yet. It’s a big reason why we are where we are. We’ve got to have all of our guys want to do it.”
Even though the Buccs are now 0-3 on the season there were quarters the team showed great effort. The key to capture victories is playing well in all four quarters of a game.
