COVINGTON – The Covington Buccaneers are now 0-8 so far this season after suffering an unfortunate 74-64 loss to neighboring rival Bradford in the first game of the annual Buccaneer Holiday Tournament.
The Buccaneers started out the game with a quick three-pointer by Brairen Denson, but the offense struggled throughout the rest of the first period by scoring only two more points. Fortunately, Bradford didn’t light up the scoreboard in the first period even though that team held a slim 8-5 lead heading into the second period.
Unfortunately, the Buccaneers found difficulty on defense throughout the rest of the first half as Bradford went on a rampage offensively by scoring 23 points to take a comfortable 31-22 lead at the half.
What hurt the Buccaneers in the first half was several players suffering too many fouls.
The Buccaneers put forth their best offensive performance in the third period by scoring 25 points, but the Railroaders were able to maintain a 52-47 lead heading into the final frame.
In the final period the Buccaneers looked like they were focused on chucking up three-pointers, which had some success as all five buckets outside of two free throws were treys. However, Bradford dominated the fourth period inside the paint by outscoring the Buccaneers 22-17 to close out the 10-point win.
Bradford had four players score double-digits in the game with Rallie Wirrig leading everyone with a game-high 29 points.
The Buccaneers had three players score double-digits in the game with Brant Angle leading the team with 18 points.
