COVINGTON – The effort and execution finally rose to the occasion on Saturday as the Covington Buccaneers put forth their best game of the season in a 62-47 win over New Knoxville.

“We finally played our most complete game of the year,” said Covington coach Logan Carey. “There was about a ninety second stretch there in the 4fourth where we weren’t great, but we pulled through.”

The fourth quarter was the most impressive offensive performance for Covington as the Buccaneers outscored the Rangers 23-14 in the final frame. Much of it was due to making open looks as the Buccaneers connected on four three-pointers and four two-pointers in the fourth. Plus, three free throws on five attempts dropped in as well.

What made it mostly impressive is the way Covington was able to overcome foul trouble throughout the game.

“We got ourselves into some foul trouble and had a bunch of guys step up in all facets when called on,” Carey explained.

The game was tight throughout the first three periods as Covington held slim margins with a 13-11 lead after one, a 23-19 lead at the break and a 39-34 lead at the end of the third.

In the third period Landin Cassel scored seven points, while Reagan Tipps scored five points, Brogen Angle dropped in two and Brant Angle scored two points.

The momentum increased in the fourth quarter as Brogen Angle scored 10 of his 21 points in the frame, while Reagan Tipps dropped in two treys and a free throw for seven points. Brant Angle hit a three-pointer, while Kian French made a basket and Tyler Jay made a free throw.

The 62 points scored by Covington was the most in a game throughout the season at this point. The Buccs made 16 two-pointers, 8 three-pointers and made six of 12 free throws.

Brogen Angle led the way with 21 points, while Brant Angle scored 14 points and Reagan Tipps dropped in 12 points. Four more Buccaneers scored as well.

New Knoxville had three players score double-digits, but only one more player was able to score just two more points.

Covington’s record is now 4-10 and team continuity is starting to improve with eight more games left in the regular season.

“We’ve been talking about making a tournament run and in order to do that we had to get this one,” Carey said. “They (New Knoxville) are ranked above us in the state of Ohio, so we felt like we had something to prove. It was a good win for us, but we realize we have bigger goals coming up.  This was a step in the right direction.”

The next opportunity to increase the level of play is on Tuesday at Bethel. The Buccaneers still need to find a way to capture their first win in the TRC.
