SIDNEY – Covington was in contention against Lehman until the wheels fell off in the second half that led to a 50-29 defeat.
Lehman is a talented team without a loss so far this season, but the Buccaneers came out with great effort at the start of the game. Seniors Tanner Palsgrove and Brogen Angle set the tone offensively by scoring all 11 points for the Buccs in the opening frame. Reagan Tipps stepped up in the second with a three-pointer and a layup, while Brogen dropped in three more buckets to keep the Buccs in contention even though they trailed 26-23 at the half.
“Offensively, I thought we played our best that first half,” said Covington coach Logan Carey. “We were patient and made the right reads, which turned into easy shots at the rim.”
Things went down hill in the second half quickly though as the Buccaneers couldn’t find a way to keep the ball going through the bottom of the net.
“The second half was a different story. I didn’t think there was a lot of player movement or ball movement,” Carey explained. “Defensively, I’m not sure we allowed more than two offensive boards.”
Covington was only able to connect on two baskets in the entire second half and made two of four free throws. This led to only six points in the third and zero points in the fourth quarter.
Lehman was able to pull away in the second half by outscoring Covington 24-6.
Overall, it was two different type of games on one night – one in the first half where the Buccs played fairly well and then the second half where Lehman dominated. If the Buccaneers can find a way to play all four quarters like they did in the first half against Lehman, things will change.
“We’re getting there, we just need to put a full game together,” Carey said.
Now, Covington is 1-6 overall and 0-5 in the TRC. The Buccs host a Holiday Tournament next Friday and Saturday.
