LADY BUCCS WIN THE HOLIDAY TOURNAMENT

COVINGTON – In what was one of the most exciting games in the annual Buccaneer Holiday Classic, the Covington Lady Buccs pulled out a thrilling 43-37 victory over Arcanum.

The Lady Buccs opened up the game by outscoring Arcanum 17-10 in the first period, but found themselves in a difficult situation in the second period as seniors Maggie Anderson and Gabrielle Hartwig were forced to the bench in foul trouble. This benefitted Arcanum as the Lady Trojans were able to outscore Covington 16-8 in the second period to take a 26-25 lead at the break.

Anderson and Hartwig were able to get back into the game in the second half and their presence helped the Lady Buccs claim a 36-33 led with one quarter left in the game.

A huge shot by Delaney Murphy gave Covington a five-point lead and the Lady bucks were able to spread the ball around to eat up the clock. However, Arcanum was able to record a steal and was fouled in an attempted layup that led to two straight free throws. This put Arcanum back into contention, but the Lady Buccs made a huge offensive play as Avery Koffer faked out a defender and sprinted to the basket for a layup to push Covington’s lead to five points once again with limited time left on the clock.

Arcanum was put in position to foul and the Lady Buccs were able to knock down the tree throws needed to secure the 43-37 win.

Sophomore Emalyn Johnson had a great game as she led the Lady Buccs with 13 points. Maggie Anderson finished with 11 points and Avery Koffer scored 10 points. Delaney Murphy knocked down some big shots for nine points.

Maggie Anderson was selected as the Most Valuable Player in the tournament, while Emalyn Johnson and Avery Koffer were also selected on the All-Tournament Team.

Covington improves its record to 9-2 on the season and will look to keep momentum going on January 4th at Riverside.
