TECHUMSEH – The Covington Lady Buccs came up short in a 61-51 loss to a very good Southeastern team, but these girls put in so much maximum effort for four quarters to hopefully build themselves for the future.
The biggest impact were the three seniors; Avery Koffer, Delaney Murphy and Hollan Koffer – players who showcased their competitive desire in their final game of their high school careers.
Avery Koffer led the Lady Bucss with 23 points – 15 of them coming on five three-pointers. Delaney Murphy scored 11 points, but also shared the basketball to put teammates into essential positions to possibly score points. Plus, Hollan Koffer didn’t put any points on the board, but her effort at both ends of the floor had a huge impact to help the Lady Buccs potentially capture an upsetting victory over a higher seeded team.
What prevented the Lady Buccs from capturing a tournament victory was the overall size advantage Southeastern had on the floor – especially #2 Ry Workman, who controlled the game inside the paint with the most individual 27 points scored in the game.
Still, Covington stayed close in the first half by trailing just 28-21 and remained in contention for a possible comeback victory by trailing 46-34 heading into the final frame.
The Lady Buccs battled hard down the stretch, but came up short despite outscoring Southeastern 17-15 in the final period.
Covington closed out its season record at 8-15, but the overall effort put forth by the team throughout the schedule can hopefully build more success in the future. The key for future success is how well the players put forth the time and fundamentals implemented by their great head coach, Chad Mason.
