COVINGTON – The Covington Lady Buccs lost to Newton 70-40 at home to close out the regular season with an 8-14 overall record.

The Lady Buccs look to rebound in the opening game of the post-season tournament against Southeastern next Saturday at Techumseh at 2:00pm.

Early in the game the Lady Buccs had golden opportunities to take a quality lead, but four missed layups and four missed free throws led to a 12-12 tie late in the first quarter. Then Newton closed out the first quarter with a layup off of a steal and a three-pointer to take a 17-12 lead.

Covington responded by tying the score at 17-17 early in the second quarter, but Newton outscored the Lady Buccs 13-2 throughout the rest of the second quarter to take a 30-19 lead at the break.

Newton followed up by outscoring Covington 40-21 in the second half to hand the Lady Buccs a 30-point loss.

What hurt the Lady Buccs throughout the game was the turnovers forced by the Newton defense, several missed free throws and the struggle of knocking down open shots.

Covington was led in scoring by senior Delaney Murphy, who tallied 15 points in the game.
