COVINGTON – The rivalry between Covington and Miami East continues in a strong fashion as both teams played extremely well defensively, but fortunately the Lady Buccs were able to capture a 38-25 win.

Both teams were able to have success offensively in the opening frame as Covington held a 12-10 lead after one. What hurt Miami East early on was the foul trouble committed by standout senior Katie Paulus, who was forced to the bench after leading the Lady Vikings with seven points early in the second period.

Covington was able to hold the Lady Vikings to just three points in the second period, but struggled offensively by scoring just six points throughout the remainder of the first half. This led to a slim 18-13 lead for Covington at the break.

The Lady Buccs outscored Miami East 9-4 in the third period to push their lead to 27-17 with one quarter to play.

Down the stretch in the final frame the Lady Buccs were able to make some huge offensive plays to secure the victory. Two were on buckets connected by Maggie Anderson after pulling down offensive rebounds and Avery Koffer juked out a Miami East defender for a layup. Plus, Emalyn Johnson powered her way to the basket and connected on a free throw, while Gabrielle Hartwig dropped in two free throws.

This all led to the 13-point victory for the Lady Buccs.

Despite playing against a great defensive performance by Miami East, Maggie Anderson led the Lady Buccs with a game-high 14 points. Avery Koffer had 8 points and Gabrielle Hartwig scored six points, while Emalyn Johnson and Delaney Murphy both scored five points.

Covington improves its record to 11-2 overall and 7-0 in the TRC. Next up is another league matchup against Troy Christian at home on Saturday.
