COVINGTON – In the most exciting game so far this season, the Covington Lady Buccs defeated Milton-Union 48-42 to put themselves in the top spot of the TRC standings with a 4-0 league record.

Milton-Union is very talented as it entered the game unbeaten at 8-0 overall and 4-0 in the league. The way the Lady Bulldogs played showed just how talented of a team they are.

Fortunately, Covington was able to showcase its talent as well despite some adverse situations throughout the game. What hurt the Lady Buccs the most were so many turnovers and Milton’s ability to capture many layups by racing so fast down the floor.

Covington held a 12-11 lead after one, but Milton caught fire by scoring 16 points in the second period to take a 27-24 lead at the break.

The third period was a back-and-forth contest by both teams, but the Lady Bulldogs were able to push its lead by one more point advantage, 38-34.

Things turned in favor of the Lady Buccs in the final frame due to their impressive defensive performance.

Covington started the fourth by scoring six straight points to take a 40-38 lead, but Milton was able to reclaim the lead to 42-40 due to a bucket and two free throws. But those were the final points the Lady Bulldogs were able to put on the board throughout the rest of the game.

The Lady Buccs’ senior Maggie Anderson scored two straight baskets to give Covington a 44-42 lead with under one minute left. A huge defensive stop gave the Lady Buccs the ball back and Milton-Union was forced to foul to extend the clock.

Avery Koffer followed up with four straight free throws to seal the 48-42 win.

Overall, Covington tied its school record by making 12 out of 12 free throws – 6 for 6 by Maggie Anderson, 4 for 4 by Avery Koffer and 2 for 2 by Emalyn Johnson.

Maggie Anderson had a huge night by leading the Lady Buccs with a game-high 22 points. Avery Koffer scored double-digit as well with 11 points.

The win advances Covington’s record to 6-2 overall and 4-0 in the TRC. Next up is a road game on Saturday at 7:00pm at Troy Christian.
