COVINGTON – Covington opened up Saturday with a quick start and dominated throughout much of the game in a 51-29 victory over Troy Christian.

The Lady Buccs jumped out to a 16-0 lead to start the game, but Troy Christian was able to knock down two straight three pointers in the final 30 seconds of the first period to close the gap to 16-6.

Covington responded in the second quarter by outscoring Troy Christian 15-2 to take a 31-8 lead at the break. Much of the impact was the outstanding defensive effort and execution by the Lady Buccs.

Things continued in the third as Covington pushed its lead to 48-13, which started a running clock. This was just posted midway through the third period and Covington started rotating every player on the roster onto the floor.

With the game in a running clock and a victory pretty much locked up, Covington went into an offensive mode to pass the ball around as much as possible to eat up time on the clock. Unfortunately, the defensive effort wasn’t the same for the Lady Buccs throughout the rest of the game as Troy Christian was able to take advantage of it by scoring 16 more points.

Still, the final period was a learning experience for many of the younger players who were on the floor. Despite scoring just three points in the final period, the Lady Buccs did well eating up time with several of their possessions, which limited Troy Christian more scoring opportunities.

Maggie Anderson led the Lady Buccs with a game-high 22 points and Avery Koffer tallied 12 points.

Covington improves its record to 12-2 overall and 8-0 in the TRC. Next up is.another league contest at Bethel on Thursday.
