DAYTON – Coming off of two straight defeats, the Covington Lady Buccs knew Saturday’s game at Northridge was extremely important to turn the momentum into the right direction. Covington also knew it wasn’t going to be easy because Northridge is a very much improved team from a year ago.
And it was a battle, especially early on as Northridge took a 9-8 lead after one. Covington was able to outscore the Polar Bears 13-6 in the second quarter to take a 21-15 lead at the break.
The Lady Buccs gradually pulled away in the second half thanks to four clutch three pointers by Maggie Anderson and Gracie Anderson, along with a pair of baskets each by Maggie Anderson, Carlie Besecker and freshman Avery Koffer.
Covington also took advantage of opportunities at the free throw line by converting on nine of 14 attempts – four of those coming from freshman Delaney Murphy, who went 4-for-4.
The Lady Buccs closed out the contest by outscoring Northridge 17-12 in the final frame to cap a 50-38 win.
Maggie Anderson led Covington with 14 points, while Gracie Anderson and Carlie Besecker scored 10 points each.
Covington improves to 5-2 overall and 3-1 in the TRC. The Lady Buccs host Milton-Union next Thursday in yet another critical league game.
