WEST MILTON – The Covington Lady Buccs put together an outstanding defensive performance in a convincing 49-26 win over Milton-Union.

The victory was critical for the Lady Buccs as they are now 11-0 in the TRC with three more league games left. Covington is also 16-2 overall and has won the last 12 games.

Things were rough at the start as Milton-Union dropped in three treys in the first period and Covington struggled hitting several wide open shots. This led to a 13-9 deficit for the Lady Buccs at the end of the first.

Milton-Union was obviously focused on holding Maggie Anderson in check, which was successful in the first frame as Anderson only had two shot opportunities. Fortunately, other Lady Buccs stepped up, which led to a 17-17 tie midway through the second period.

Anderson then dropped in a layup off of a rebound and a three-pointer to push Covington’s lead to 22-17 at the break.

The biggest impact for Covington after the first quarter was the outstanding defensive effort. The Lady Bulldogs have some talented athletes, but Covington was able to hold Milton-Union to just 13 points throughout the final three periods.

Covington outscored Milton-Union 16-7 in the third period to push its advantage to 38-24 and then closed out the game on an 11-2 scoring advantage in the fourth quarter.

Offensively, there was plenty of balance for the Lady Buccs as three players reached double digits in scoring – Maggie Anderson (15 points), Delaney Murphy (10 Points) and Emalyn Johnson (10 points). Plus, Avery Koffer had seven points and Gabrielle Hartwig scored six points.

Next up for Covington is a road contest against neighboring rival Newton next Monday.
