COVINGTON – Covington senior Maggie Anderson became the 11th player in program history to reach the 1000-point milestone in a career as she scored a game-high 28 points to lead the Lady Buccs to a thrilling 46-36 win over Bethel.

Granted, basketball is a team sport and every player on the team had an impact on a hard-fought victory against a very tough Bethel team who gave a huge amount of effort all night. But, this game was very memorable evening for Maggie and her family.

Anderson started the Lady Buccs off strong by scoring all 12 points for Covington in the first quarter. Unfortunately, Anderson was forced to head to the bench after picking up her second foul early in the second frame.

When Anderson went to the bench Bethel held an 18-13 lead, but the Lady Buccs were able to outscore the Bees 7-2 over the remainder of the first half to tie the score at 20-20 at the break.

Maggie followed up on the floor at the beginning of the third and eighth points in the frame. Her final bucket in the third came on a layup after a steal, which put her to 1000 points in her career. A timeout was called so the ball could be handed to Maggie by coach Shawn Naff and then she sprinted up to the top of the stands to hand the ball to her parents, who gave her hugs and kisses as the Covington crowd cheered for Anderson’s accomplishment.

The game was tight at the end of the third as Covington held a slim 34-33 lead with one quarter to play.

Fortunately, the Lady Buccs went on a 12-0 run to start the fourth as Maggie connected on two more treys and a layup, which led to a 46-36 victory.

Now, Anderson has 1008 career points with 17 more regular season games left and hopefully a long tournament run.

Next up is a battle against Russia on Monday at home. The game is scheduled to start at 6:00pm.
