BRANDT – Bethel is a very talented basketball team, but Covington was hoping to tie up the season series between the two programs and put itself back into contention for a TRC championship.
Unfortunately a slow start by the Lady Buccs was to much to overcome as Bethel dominated en route to a 57-34 win. The victory for Bethel keeps the Lady Bees at the top of the league standings at 8-0 and – unless a miracle happens – eliminates Covington from contention at 6-3.
Playing without junior Gracie Anderson, Covington didn’t put forth a complete team performance that was needed against a team the caliber of Bethel. Sophomore Maggie Anderson and freshman Avery Koffer did their best to keep the Lady Buccs in the game as the two combined to score 32 of Covington’s 34 points.
It wasn’t enough as Covington fell behind 19-9 after one and 30-11 at the break after scoring just two points on a pair of free throws in the second period.
The Lady Buccs continued to battle in the second half as Maggie Anderson went on a rampage by scoring 15 second half points. Still, Bethel outscored Covington 27-23 in the second half to maintain its advantage.
Maggie Anderson led the way for Covington with 19 points on the night and Avery Koffer finished with 13. Delaney Murphy scored the other two points for Covington on free throws.
Bethel was led by a 21-point effort from Kerigan Calhoun, who was red hot from behind the three-point line as 18 of her points came on six treys. Karley Moore finished with 18 points.
Covington falls to 9-7 overall and 6-3 in the TRC, while Bethel improves to 11-3 overall and 8-0 in the league.
The Lady Buccs still have a lot to play for and it begins on Saturday at home against Northridge.
