COVINGTON – In the season opener the Covington Buccaneers put forth a great effort, but came up short in a 4-2 loss to St. Henry.

The Buccaneers opened the scoring with a run in the bottom of the fourth, but St. Henry plated three runs in the top of the sixth that put Covington into dire straight. Covington responded well in the bottom half of the inning to close the gap to 3-2, but the Redskins scored another run in the top of the seventh to secure a 4-2 victory.

Senior pitcher Ashton Skaggs threw extremely well for the Buccs throughout the entire game, but unfortunately suffered a loss due to limited offensive execution as Covington only recorded two hits throughout the entire game – one by Caiden Hollingsworth and another by Garrett Leistner.

“Ashton (Skaggs) was throwing a perfect game through five innings,” commented Covington coach David Heffelfinger. “The guys played a great complete team and competed with a very skilled team in St. Henry.”

Ashton Skaggs was the standout for the Buccs on the hill as he struck out six batters and allowed just four hits against a very talented St. Henry team.

Even though the Buccaneers lost their first game of the season, the possibility of a great season is still in contention due to the talent on the team.

Next up for the Buccs is a game at Botkins next Monday.
