SIDNEY – The Covington Buccaneers overcame a 2-0 deficit against Lehman by scoring five unanswered runs to capture a fortunate 5-2 victory.

Lehman opened up the game with a run in the first after Gus Richard doubled and then the Buccaneers committed two straight errors to start the second inning that out runners on first and third. Caleb Smith struck out two straight batters to capture two outs, but another miscue by the Buccaneer defense led to a 2-0 lead for Lehman.

After Covington’s head coach David Heffelfinger refocused the players, the Buccaneers played very well throughout the next five innings.

The Buccs hit the ball well and were finally able to tie the game by scoring two runs in the top of the fourth inning thanks to a double by Talon Pergram, and a single by Christian Skaggs.

Covington took the lead with a run in the top of the fifth due to a single by Caiden Hollingsworth. The Buccaneers scored another one runs in the sixth inning and the seventh inning to secure the win.

The bottom of the lineup helped Covington capture the win over Lehman as Finn Rogers, James Kuether, and Christian Skaggs combined for four of the team’s eight hits in the victory. They scored one run and drove in one.

Caleb Smith earned the win for the Buccs on the mound. He allowed just two hits, struck out four batters and walked three over seven innings.

Finn Rogers and Christian Skaggs were a force together in the lineup, as they each collected two hits for Covington. Talon Pergram drove the middle of the lineup, leading Covington with two runs batted in. The right-handed hitter went 1-for-3 on the day. Defensively, the Buccs turned one double play in the game.

Covington now has five straight wins to improve their overall record to 10-9 and now 8-5 in the TRC.

Next up for Covington is a game at Ansonia on Saturday.
