
COVINGTON – The Covington Buccaneers built a six-run lead through six innings and held off a huge final inning by Miami East for a narrow 10-9 victory.
Both teams scored two runs in the first and Miami East put two more on the board in the top of the second to take a 4-2 lead.
The Buccaneers battled back by scoring a run in the bottom of the second and five runs in the bottom of the third to take an 8-4 lead.
After a scoreless fourth inning, Covington pushed its lead to 10-4 with two runs on the bottom of the fifth on a huge two-run double by Garrett Leistner.
Neither team scored in the sixth, but Miami East put Covington into dire straight in the top of the seventh. Yes, Miami East scored five runs in that inning, but the Buccaneers were able to hold on for the one-point win.
Statistically, the Buccaneers were fortunate to pull out a win as Miami East tallied 12 hits to just 6 hits for the Buccs. Plus, Covington committed four errors and Miami East only had one error.
Senior pitcher Tyler Jay captured the win on the mound as he struck out five batters and walked three while surrendering 12 hits.
Garrett Leistner led the Buccs with three runs batted in, while Ashton Skaggs and Tyler Palsgrove both connected on two hits. Tanner Palsgrove played well at the plate as he drew three walks. The two Palsgrove brother (Tanner and Tyler) and Ashton Skaggs stole multiple bases as well.
Covington is now 4-5 overall and 3-3 in the TRC with a game at Northridge tomorrow (Friday).
