COVINGTON – The Covington Buccaneers put forth one of their best games at this point of the season, which led to an impressive 4-1 win over Lehman Catholic.
Caleb Smith, the lone senior on the team, was dominant on the mound. He started as the pitcher and rang up 10 strikeouts and only gave up three hits and one run over seven innings while walking none batter.
Covington opened the scoring in the bottom of the third thanks to three singles and first got on the board when Talon Pergram singled, scoring two runs.
Covington amassed 10 hits in the game, which put the team into great positions for several scoring opportunities. Talon Pergram drove the middle of the lineup, leading Covington with two runs batted in. Pergram, a right-handed hitter, went 1-for-3 on the day.
Gunner Uderman, Christian Skaggs, and Brairen Denson each collected two hits for Covington.
Defensively, the Buccs were sure-handed and didn’t commit a single error. Colton Goins made the most plays with 10.

The progression Covington is making is due to the culture being established by the coaching staff, primarily the head coach David Heffelfinger. He is putting opportunities together for future players to buy into the program, which was on display this past Saturday when youth baseball players had their pictures taken on the high school baseball field. During the entire time nine teams had their pictures taken, Heffelfinger had his high school players on the field signing free autographs for the youth Buccaneers.
Hopefully more youth baseball players and their parents start attending Buccaneer baseball games so they can learn more about the culture and high standard of execution the Covington coaching staff is implementing.
The next opportunity for future Buccaneers to watch a game on the home field is this Thursday against the Riverside Pirates.
