PLEASANT HILL – The Covington Buccaneers picked up an impressive 7-6 win in a non-conference game at Newton on Friday.

Newton built a 3-0 lead in the first two innings, but the Buccaneers never relented, which has been the standard implemented by coach David Heffelfinger all season. That was proven as Covington scored a run in the third, another in the fifth and two more in the sixth to take a 4-3 lead.

The Buccaneers then scored three more runs in the top of the seventh to take a 7-3 lead, but Newton, who is also gritty, put the Buccaneers in a tough situation by closing the gap to 7-6 in the bottom of the seventh. Fortunately, the Buccaneers were able to record the final out needed to preserve the win.

Brairen Denson earned the win on the hill for the Buccs. He surrendered just five hits in five innings, but some errors hurt the Buccs early in the game. Fortunately, the Buccs were able to do what needed to be done to win and Ashton Skaggs deserves credit for collecting a save as a pitcher in the final two innings.

The Buccs wrapped up nine hits on the night with Garrett Leistner and Brairen Denson leading the team with two hits each. Tanner Palsgrove was walked three times as well to put himself on the base more often than not.

The Buccs even up their record to 9-9 at this point of the season and are hoping to create a winning record on Saturday at home against Ansonia.
