
COVINGTON – The Covington Buccaneers defeated Mississinawa Valley 9-1 to capture their first win in the 2025 season.
The biggest impact on the game was the pitching performance by Tyler Jay, who went the distance and struck out 14 batters throughout the game. He only allowed six hits and walked just one batter in seven innings on the mound.
Covington scored first in the bottom of the second inning after an error by Mississinawa Valley and the Blackhawks tied the game at 1-1 after scoring a run in the top of the fifth.
The Buccaneers took over the game by scoring two runs in the bottom of the fifth, which was started by a very well executed bunt by Ashton Skaggs. Caiden Hollingsworth then drilled a single that led to the second run in the inning.
After holding the Blackhawks in check in the top of the sixth, the Buccaneers erupted with six more runs in the bottom half of the inning to secure the win. Brairen Denson singled to drive in two runs, while Kian French drove in two more runs with another single. Tanner Palsgrove connected on a double that drove in another run and Tyler Palsgrove drove in the final run with another single hit.
Overall, Covington outhit Mississinawa Valley 11 to 6 and committed just one error to two errors by the Blackhawks.
The Buccaneers had played well in two out of the first three games that ended in losses, but now have a win to improve their record to 1-3 in the early part of the season. Hopefully this execution and enthusiasm continues as the Buccs have the potential to put together a very good season.
