COVINGTON – The Covington Buccaneers battled back from a 15-point deficit to cut the margin to five points late in the final period, but ran out of time in a 61-52 loss to Lehman Catholic on Tuesday.
Lehman had a significant size advantage over Covington, but the Buccaneers never relented throughout the entire contest – even when things didn’t go their way.
The visiting Cavaliers jumped out to an 18-8 lead after one, but Covington battled back with a 13-2 run to take a 21-20 lead with 4:36 left in the half. The big spark came from a pair of treys by Brogen Angle and Connor Humphrey and layups by Tanner Palsgrove and Angle.
Unfortunately for the Buccs, Tanner Palsgrove and Brogen Angle fouled themselves in foul trouble and Lehman was able to take advantage by outscoring Covington 12-6 over the remainder of the half to take a 32-27 lead into the locker room.
The Buccaneers struggled hitting shots in the third, which resulted in to only three field goals in the frame – a three-pointer and a runner by Brogen Angle and a layup by Bryson Hite.
Lehman outscored the Buccs 13-7 in the period to push its advantage to 45-34 to start the fourth.
The Cavaliers opened the final period with back-to-back baskets to push their lead to 49-34 and force a Covington timeout.
The Buccs responded with a 12-2 run capped by back-to-back treys by Brogen Angle – the second coming with 3:09 left to cut the deficit to 51-46.
Covington matched the Cavaliers point-for-point over the following two-minutes and trailed 57-52 with just over one minute left.
Unfortunately the Buccs ran out of time and was forced to foul in an attempt to extend the clock. Lehman was able to convert on four-of five free throws down the stretch.
Britton Miller led Covington with 17 points, while Brogen Angle finished with 16 points.
The difference in the game was the difficulty the Buccaneers had in containing Lehman’s leading scorers Justin Chapman and Da’Ron Pride, who combined to score 43 of the Cavaliers’ 61 points.
Covington falls to 5-14 overall and 0-12 in the TRC. The Buccs continue to look for their first league win on Friday as they host Riverside in the home finale.
