COVINGTON – The Covington Lady Buccs honored seniors Maggie Anderson and Gabrielle Hartwig with a 46-13 win over Lehman on Senior Night.
Senior Nights are mixed in emotions for so many Buccaneer fans. The most enjoyable part is praising the seniors who are being honored, but what makes it gut wrenching is it is a reminder that there are not many more games those seniors will play on the home floor.
Seniors Maggie Anderson and Gabrielle Hartwig are two great young ladies who represent Covington the right way. Both have had a strong impact on the program since they began four years ago as freshmen. This year, as seniors, they both have been phenomenal throughout the entire season.
Thursday night against Lehman, things didn’t start out well for Covington as Lehman held an 8-5 lead at the end of the first period.
But the tone was reset as the defense by the Lady Buccs took over the game. Relentlessly, the Lady Buccs held Lehman to just five more points over the final three periods. This closed out just 13 points surrendered by Covington – a season low.
Offensively, things didn’t go well for Covington in the first and third as only five points were scored in both periods. Still, the Lady Buccs find a way to pick things up, which happened in the second period and the final frame.
After trailing 8-5 at the end of the first,. Covington outscored Lehman 14-0 in the second to take a 19-8 lead at the break.
And, after a sluggish third period where the lead was only increased to 24-10, the Lady Buccs erupted with 22 points in the fourth.
Six players scored for the Lady Buccs with sophomore Kylie Palsgrove leading the team with a game-high 11 points. Seniors Maggie Anderson and Gabrielle Hartwig combined for 15 points.
Covington improves to 18-2 overall and 12-0 in the TRC with two more league games left – first at home on Saturday against Riverside and then a road contest next Thursday at Miami East.
