CARLIE BESECKER COMMITS TO MOUNT UNION

COVINGTON – Covington senior Carlie Besecker, who is a three-sport athlete in volleyball, basketball and track, committed to the University of Mount Union on Friday during the annual Covington Track Invitational.

Carlie is the daughter of Angie Besecker and 1986 Covington graduate Bill Besecker.

Mount Union, an NCAA Division III program, is located in in Alliance, Ohio and Besecker’s plans are to compete in two sports for the Raiders, basketball and track.

The reason Carlie chose to pursue her dreams at Mount Union is due to the reputation of the school and the quality of the sports programs.

Educationally, Besecker will major in Psychology and go on to get a Masters Degree to become a Sports Psychologist. Her reason to pursue those degrees is to help athletes overcome anxiety and depression, as well as any other mental health issues made worse because of sports.

The opportunity to pursue her dreams at Mount Union has been put in motion due to Carlie’s success as an outstanding athlete multi-sport at Covington High School.

In basketball, Carlie Besecker is second in school history with 755 career rebounds and seventh with 1122 career points. She played her first two years under coach Brandon Studebaker and her final two seasons under coach Shawn Naff as a four-year starter for the Lady Buccs where the program compiled a 67-30 record during her career.

In track, Besecker competed under coach Dave Tobias and qualified for the state track meet last season as a junior in the 400 meter dash. She also competed in several other events over the course of her career – the 100 meter dash, 200 meter dash, several relays, the high jump and long jump. Besecker still has the remainder of her senior season ahead of her with an opportunity to return to state.

Carlie also excelled in the sport of volleyball at Covington as a four-year starter under coaches Lonnie Cain and Ellie (Cain) French.

In the tradition of Covington athletics, many graduates have advanced to the collegiate level with success. Carlie Besecker has the athletic talent to have success at Mount Union.
