COVINGTON – The Covington Buccaneers had an opportunity to capture their first win of the season, but came up short in a 67-57 loss to Milton-Union.

Saturday was a special night due to the four people who were inducted into the Athletic Hall of Fame, but the varsity basketball game didn’t close out a great night.

Covington struggled early as Milton-Union built a 12-4 lead midway through the first quarter due to the Buccaneers struggling to knock down shots and allowing the Bulldogs to score on several layups. Fortunately, the Buccaneers were able to close out the remaining minutes of the first period by outscoring the Bulldogs 6-4 to close the gap to 16-10.

The Buccaneers remained in contention in the second quarter by scoring 13 points, but the Bulldogs were able got push their lead to 30-23 at the break.

Things didn’t adjust in advantage for the Buccaneers in the final two periods as Milton-Union outscored the Buccs 37-34 throughout the rest of the game.

For Covington, sophomore Brant Angle played a great game as he led the team with 22 points. Brairen Denson scored 12 points and Jayden Wackler had 11 points.

“Bottom line is we’ve got to value the ball,” commented coach Logan Carey. “Our offense was great for the most part. We shot the ball well, executed well at times. We just can’t afford to turn it over as much as we have been. We had a 14-2 run there in the third and we are capable of playing that way for longer stretches. We just have to value the ball better throughout the game.”

Covington is now 0-8 overall this season and 0-5 in the TRC. Hopefully the Buccaneers can find a way to capture a win next week in the annual Buccaneer Holiday Tournament.
