COVINGTON – The Covington Buccaneers created some special memories for senior Corey Marion with a dominating 18-0 run rule victory in five innings over Fairlawn on Senior Night.

The Buccs are a young team with Marion being the lone senior on the roster and he had a great game by pounding out two hits and walking once in his four appearances at the plate. Marion also drove in a run with an RBI single in the first and crossed the plate twice, once on a passed ball in the third and again on a Fairlawn error in the fourth.

What made the night even more special was the performance by the Buccaneer defense and the pitching by Tyler Jay, which led to a no-hitter. Covington didn’t commit a single error on defense and Jay struck out nine of the 16 batters he faced in the five innings of action. The lone base runner came on a walk.

Covington opened the game by plating six runs in the first as Carter Owens scored on a wild pitch, Tyler Jay scored on an error, Tanner Palsgrove scored on a single by Grant Blore, Trey Schmelzer stole home, Blore scored on passed ball and then Connor Humphrey scored on an RBI single by Corey Marion.

The Buccaneers pushed their lead to 9-0 with three runs in the second as Tyler Jay scored on wild pitch, Trey Schmelzer singled to score Jacob Tipps and Schmelzer scored on a sac fly by Grant Blore.

In the third the Buccs plated three more runs as Corey Marion scored on passed ball and Trey Schmelzer connected on a two-run single to score Tyler Jay and Tanner Palsgrove.

Leading 12-0 heading into the bottom of the fourth, the Buccaneers kept the momentum rolling by scoring six more runs. Calub Hembree and Corey Marion scored on errors by Fairlawn and then Carter Owens scored when Garrett Leistner was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. Tyler Jay scored on an infield fly and Kian French drove in Carson Taylor and Garrett Leistner on a two-run double.

Covington tallied seven hits with Corey Marion, Tyler Jay and Trey Schmelzer all recording two hits each. The other hit came on a double by Kian French.

The Buccaneers improve their record to 7-11 on the season.
