ANSONIA – The Covington Buccaneers opened up the 2025-26 season on the road at Ansonia and suffered an unfortunate loss by one point, 46-45.

Covington struggled offensively in three out of the four quarters, which ultimately prevented the Buccs from opening the season with a victory.

Ansonia outscored Covington 26-17 in the first half, but the best quarter for the Buccaneers came in the third period as they scored 23 points to take a 40-37 lead. Unfortunately, the Buccaneers only scored five points in the final quarter.

“We’ve talked all season long about what good shots and good possessions look like,” commented coach Logan Carey. “Multiple scrimmages where it looked like we were understanding things. Tonight we just took a step back in our execution on offense opposed to where I thought we were. “

Covington made six treys throughout the game, but only made 11 two-point buckets.

“We don’t want to chuck up threes,” Carey explained. “We would rather get paint touches and collapse the defense. We just settled so much tonight and it cost us.”

Brairen Denson led the Buccaneers with a game-high 19 points, but he was the only player on the team finished with double digits. Ansonia had three players who scored double digits.

“We will regroup and learn from this,” saids Carey “One player with varsity experience for us on the floor means there are times it’s going to feel like we’re drinking from a fire hose.”

Next up the Buccaneers play at Miami East next Friday.
