
BRANDT – The Covington Buccaneers, which is a relatively young team, continued to progress in yet another game, but came up short in a one-point loss to Bethel on Tuesday.
Bethel scored first, but the Buccaneers 3-1 lead in the top of the third inning with runs scored after Caiden Hollingsworth walked, Bethel committed an error, and Christian Skaggs singled to center field.
The Buccaneers then pushed their lead to 5-1, but Bethel was able to regroup and took a 6-5 lead at the end of the sixth inning.
In the top of the seventh inning the Buccaneers scored two critical runs to take a 7-6 lead. Caiden Hollingsworth pounded a double to center field and James Kuether was struck by a pitch. Both eventually scored the runs needed to take a lead.
Unfortunately, Bethel was able to respond once again by scoring two runs in the bottom of the seventh to hand the Buccaneers their third straight loss.
The highest impact for the Buccaneers was the outstanding hitting performance in the game that totaled 11 hits. Hunter McMillion, Brairen Denson, and Caiden Hollingsworth each collected two hits for Covington. Brairen Denson and Caiden Hollingsworth each drove in two runs and the Buccs had patience at the plate, amassing six walks. Tyler Palsgrove and Caiden Hollingsworth led the team with two walks each.
Defensively, the Buccaneers turned one double play in the game. Hunter McMillion took the loss for the Buccs on the mound. He pitched fairly well as he went six and one-third innings.
Covington is now 2-5 overall and 1-2 in the TRC with a home game against Northridge is set up for Thursday.
