COVINGTON – The Covington Buccaneers dropped a 53-23 contest to Lehman Catholic of Friday, but the loss didn’t take away a special night where senior Levi Weldy and his great-grandfather Richard C. Brown were honored in front of the Covington faithful.

Prior to the game Covington High School recognized senior Levi Weldy for developing a kiosk that honors Military Veterans from Covington. A presentation of a diploma was also awarded to Levi Weldy’s family members for Levi’s great-grandfather, Richard C. Brown, who was a Covington student in the 1940s. Richard Brown couldn’t earn his high school diploma at the time because he joined the United States Army prior to graduation. During Richard Brown’s time in the Army, he took part in World War II and was awarded the following medals for his outstanding military service: Bronze Star Medal for his heroism in ground combat, Good Conduct Medal, American Theater Service Medal, European African Middle Eastern Service Medal, and a World War II Victory Medal.

The game didn’t start out well for the Buccs on a night where many of the kids have battled sickness over the past week.

Covington turned the ball over in its first four possessions and couldn’t make a shot attempt until 3:15 left in the opening period. Overall, Covington only had four shot attempts in the opening frame and missed each one as Lehman built a 14-0 lead at the end of the first.

Britton Miller made Covington’s first bucket of the game 45 seconds into the second, but the Buccs only connected on two more buckets throughout the remainder of the first half – both by junior Tanner Palsgrove.

Lehman built a 29-6 lead at the break and cruised to a 53-23 victory.

The loss ends a two-game winning streak for the Buccs and drops their record to 2-4 overall and 1-3 in the TRC.

Hopefully the Buccaneers can recover from the sickness that has filtered throughout the team before hosting the Buccaneer Holiday Classic on December 29th and 30th.
