COVINGTON – Covington senior Matthew Dieperink committed to Southeastern University, located in Florida, to extend his education and golf career at the college level.

Matt, the son of Brian and Michelle Dieperink, is excited about the opportunity due to his passion in the sport of golf.

“I like it down there (at Southeastern University),” he said. “I visited four schools in Florida and visited Southeastern in October. I got to play golf with the team and made relationships with them.”

Even though he isn’t sure yet what degree he is hoping to earn, Dieperink found the perfect location at Southeastern University for him to advance in life.

“It is a christian school and that is so important to me,” continued Matt. “Plus, I will get to play golf year around.”

His opportunity to progress in the sport of golf will come under the instruction of coach David Joyner. Dieperink hopes he can have an impact once he is able to enter the university in August.

“I hope to start varsity,” he said. “I know I have to be consistent in under par average.”

Matt’s passion in golf was established at a young age due to his father, Brian, introducing him to the sport.

“My dad wanted me to play (golf),” explained Matt. “I really started to care about golf a lot around my sophomore year.”

Since then, Matt has established himself as one of the top golfers in the history of the program. Coached throughout his high school career by Bill Wise, Matt was able to set three records in Covington; -6 (30) strokes in 9 holes, tied with -2 (70) strokes in 18 holes, and helped his team in 2023 set a record of 146 strokes in 9 holes.

His successes on the golf course were results from the amount of time he put in during the off-season.

“I’ve played a of golf and did a lot of Golf Week Junior Tour Tournaments in the off-season,” said Matt. “It’s just fun being out there (on the course).”

Matt plans to keep improving his skills before heading to Florida in August by doing what he has been able to do throughout his high school career – play golf as much as possible.

“I have a lot of time ahead of me to keep working on my skills,” continued Matt. “I’m going to continue to play a lot at the Troy Country Club.”
