BUCCS STYMIED BY MIAMI EAST 11-0

CASSTOWN – The Covington Buccaneers couldn’t keep up with the Miami East Vikings and fell 11-0 in five innings on Tuesday.

Miami East got on the board in the bottom of the first inning after junior KJ Gustin tripled, scoring three runs, and freshman Jackson Bone doubled, scoring two runs.

The Vikings added to their early lead in the bottom of the second inning after KJ Gustin grounded into a fielder’s choice and freshman Brennan Lilly singled down the left field line, each scoring one run.

Miami East added to their early lead in the bottom of the third inning after junior Atley Zerkle walked, and sophomore Ashton Demmitt hit a sacrifice fly, each scoring one run.

Ashton Demmitt homered to right field, scoring two runs in the bottom of the fifth for the Miami East to close out the game.

KJ Gustin earned the win on the mound for Miami East. The pitcher gave up three hits and zero runs over five innings, striking out seven and walking two.

Brairen Denson took the loss for Covington as the opening pitcher. The righty went two and one-third innings, allowing nine runs on seven hits, striking out one and walking six. Hunter McMillion also threw for two innings, allowing two runs on 3 hits. He struck out one batter and didn’t give up a walk.

Hunter McMillion, Brairen Denson, and Tyler Palsgrove each collected one hit for Covington. The Buccs didn’t commit a single error in the field. Gunner Uderman had the most chances in the field with four.

Miami East collected 10 hits in the game. KJ Gustin drove the middle of the lineup, leading the Vikings with four runs batted in. The pitcher went 1-for-3 on the day. Leadoff hitter, junior Lincoln Littlejohn, led Miami East with three hits in four at bats. Brennan Lilly collected two hits in two at bats, while Ashton Demmitt led the Vikings with two walks. Overall, the team had a strong eye at the plate, tallying six walks for the game.

Covington (1-2) plays at home on Thursday against Troy Christian in their next game.
