COVINGTON – Covington played outstanding softball over the first five games of the season, but made uncharacteristic mistakes on Thursday in a 9-8 loss to Milton-Union.
The Lady Buccs committed a season-high three errors and surrendered 15 hits to a red hot Milton-Union team.
The Lady Bulldogs jumped out to a 3-0 lead until Covington was able to break through with a run in the bottom of the second.
Things appeared to be going Covington’s way as it plated four runs in the bottom of the third with a big hit coming off the bat of Nigella Reck, who connected on her fifth home run of the season.
Leading 5-3, the Lady Buccs surrendered four runs to Milton-Union in the fourth and another run in the top fo the fifth, which led to an 8-5 lead for the visiting team.
Covington battled back by scoring three runs in the bottom of the sixth to tie the score at 8-8, but Milton-Union scored a run in the top of the seventh. The Lady Buccs couldn’t score in their final at bat, resulting in a 9-8 defeat.
The loss drops Covington’s record to 5-1 overall and 1-1 in the TRC, while Milton-Union improves to 5-1 overall and 3-0 in the TRC.
The Lady Buccs look to regroup on Saturday as they host Russia in non-conference action.
