SIDNEY – Covington finished 10-2 for second place in the TRC standings after closing out the league schedule with a 28-1 victory over Lehman Catholic in five innings.
The victory also pushes Covington’s overall record to 22-5 with one more regular season game schedule tomorrow night at Troy.
In the game against Lehman, the Lady Buccs opened up with 10 runs in the first inning and then rotated the rest of the team throughout the game. Still, even though many of the players were young, Covington continued to dominate by scoring seven runs in the second, one run in the third, seven in the fourth and three more in the fifth.
Once the score became significant, the Lady Buccs’ coaching staff was very respectful by preventing the team from piling up so many more scores. Runners were held up on bases instead of stealing and some were instructed to walk off the bases for outs.
The Lady Buccs pounded out 22 hits throughout the game with seven of them being doubles, three triples and one home run by Cassidy Iddings that increased the team record to 52 home runs of the season.
Emalyn Johnson and Taylor Foutz connected on five hits each, while Ava Hartwig and Emma Ouellette both had three hits. Two hits each were connected by Aubrey Hoying, Jayda McClure and Cassidy Iddings. Three more batters connected on one hit each – Ava Hartwig, Whitney Burns and Kayleigh Deeter.
Whitney Burns started off in the circle and pitched just one inning, while Cassidy Iddings followed up by pitching through three innings. Ideally, Ava Hartwig closed out the game by pitching in the bottom of the fifth inning.
Overall, regardless of the points on the scoreboard the Lady Buccs put maximum effort from start to finish. This was evident by Taylor Foutz as she dramatically dove in an attempt to catch a foul ball when the Lady Buccs were ahead 28-0. This intensity and effort was extremely impressive for Covington fans at the complex.
Hopefully the Lady Buccs continue to give maximum effort throughout the rest of the season.
