LADY BUCCS PULL AWAY FROM VERSAILLES

COVINGTON – The Covington Lady Buccs had a slim 7-5 lead over Versailles heading into the bottom of the fifth and scored a combined seven runs in their final two at bats to pull away for a 14-5 victory.

Versailles started the game red hot as Jenna Dirksen drilled a two-run home run in the top of the first, but Covington responded with four runs in its first at bat and then pushed the lead to 7-2 with two runs in the second and another run in the third.

The Lady Tigers battled back with a run in the fourth and two more in the fifth to cut Covington’s lead to 7-5 with the Lady Buccs coming to the plate in the bottom of the fifth.

Covington strung together several big hits resulting in four runs in the fifth and three more in the sixth to put the game away.

The Lady Buccs tallied 18 hits and committed two errors in the game, while Versailles had five hits and three errors.

Meg Rogers had a huge afternoon at the plate as she went 4-for-5 with three doubles and drove in two runs. Nigella Reck and Mara Newhouse both went 3-for-4 with Reck doubling twice, driving in three runs and scoring three times, while Newhouse doubled once, drove in two runs and scored a run herself. Reaghan Lemp drove in two runs on two hits and scored a run, while freshman Taylor Foutz recorded a pair of doubles in two at bats and scored twice.

Karyanne Turner and Whitney Burns both doubled once and scored a run a piece, while Erika Gostomksy and Maggie Anderson both singled and scored a run each. Burns drove in two runs as well.

Meg Rogers went the distance in the circle to pick upon her tenth win of the season. She struck out eight batters, walked three and allowed five hits.

Covington improves its record to 16-3 on the season and hosts Northridge tomorrow (Tuesday) evening.
