LADY BUCCS PULL AWAY 11-1 WIN OVER NEW BREMEN

COVINGTON – The Lady Buccs pulled out their ninth straight win of the season with an impressive 11-1 victory over New Bremen in five innings.

New Bremen started out the game with a run due to an error by the Lady Buccs to take a 1-0 lead. Fortunately, Covington clamped down defensively and prevented New Bremen from scoring throughout the rest of the game.

The Lady Buccs responded offensively with two runs in the bottom of the first inning to take a 2-1 lead. The biggest hit in the inning was a triple by Ava Hartwig.

Covington then scored three runs in the bottom of the third inning as Jayda McClure started off the inning with a solo home run, which put her total at this point of the season to 10. After McClure’s home run, Emalyn Johnson singled and Taylor Foutz connected on a ball to put her at third base. Johnson then scored a run on a base hit by Whitney Burns, who was switched on the base by Aubrey Hoying. Emma Ouellette closed out the third inning with a critical hit that put Hoying across the plate.

Covington then pushed its lead to 9-1 in the bottom of the fourth inning with Emalyn Johnson ignting the inning with a home run, which is her ninth one of the season. Taylor Foutz then drilled a double off the fence in center field and Whitney Burns connected on another base hit to score Foutz. The Lady Buccs scored two more runs due to another critical hit by Emma Ouellette.

New Bremen was the type of team that wasn’t ready to fold as the Cardinals put runners on second and third with one out in the top of the fifth. Fortunately, Whitney Burns recorded a very critical strikeout and then a short drive that was caught by Emma Ouellette ended the threat.

The Lady Buccs closed out the game with two runs in the bottom of the fifth. Jayda McClure scored after connecting on a hit with one out and after Emalyn Johnson drew a walk. Johnson advanced to third base and then scored on a perfectly executed bunt by Whitney Burns.

Throughout the game Covington outhit New Bremen 14-4 and Whitney Burns went the distance as the pitcher. She struck out three batters and only allowed one walk. Burns also went 2-for-2 at the plate and drove two runners across the plate.

Jayda McClure had a huge game as she went 3-for-3 at the plate with a home run, two doubles, two RBIs and scored four runs. Emalyn Johnson went 2-for-3 with a home run, three RBIs and scored three times. None of Lady Buccs struck out throughout the game and connected on 14 hit in 26 at bats. They also drew five walks throughout the game.

Covington is now 16-2 overall and will face Miami East tomorrow on the home field in a rematch from a loss to the Lady Vikings earlier in the season. This will be a critical game for a potential league title as Miami East is 6-0 in the league and Covington is 7-1.
