COVINGTON – Trailing 5-0 late in the game, the Covington Lady Buccs showed mental toughness and competitive drive in a come-from-behind 6-5 win over Marion Local.
Things didn’t go well for the Lady Buccs at the offensive end through the first five innings due to struggles of taking advantage of recording hits. Marion Local’s pitcher was good, but more often than not she threw two straight balls at the beginning of each batter. Even though in a position of 2-0 at the plate, the Lady Buccs struggled to take advantage of those opportunities.
Marion Local scored a run in the second, two in the third and two more in the fourth inning to take a 5-0 lead.
Defensively, the Lady Buccs held Marion Local in check throughout the rest of the game to keep themselves in position to possibly get the offense going.
And finally, in the sixth inning the Lady Buccs erupted at the plate. Things started with a run scored by Bella Batdorf. Cassidy Iddings followed up with a hit that drove in Nell Rogers and Elizabeth Coblentz.
Trailing 5-3, the Lady Buccs loaded the bases and Emma Ouellette drilled a triple that put the Lady Buccs on top 6-5
“We couldn’t string any hits together in the beginning, but luckily it came together at the end,” said Covington coach Brooke Gostomsky-Menker. “The girls rolled and tallied some hits together when it was needed.”
The Lady Buccs then closed out the game by getting the three final outs needed to secure the victory.
Now 2-0, the Lady Buccs host Ansonia on Thursday.
