COVINGTON – It wasn’t an easy game by any means, but the Covington Lady Buccs were able to do just enough to capture an 11-10 victory over Russia.
The biggest impact for Covington was the four home runs hit at the plate – two by Ava Hartwig and two more by Elizabeth Coblentz.
The Lady Buccs dominated early by taking a 6-0 lead through two innings with the biggest impact being the five runs scored in the bottom of the second.
Unfortunately, Russia never surrendered as it battled back to take an 8-7 lead after the top of the sixth inning. Much of it was due to the four errors committed by Covington.
The Lady Buccs showed their competitive drive by scoring four runs in the bottom of the sixth to take an 11-8 lead. Russia scored two runs in the top of the seventh, but the Lady Buccs were able to hold on for the one-point win.
Elizabeth Coblentz had a huge impact offensively by batting 3-for-4 with two home runs and driving in four runs. She now has 8 home runs this season. Ava Hartwig also had two home runs and drove in three runs, while Jayda McClure drove in two runs on two hits as well.
As a team, the Lady Buccs now have 29 home runs, which is a new school record for home runs in a season. The previous record was 27 home runs in 2023.
Emalyn Johnson and Taylor Foutz also had two hits, while Cassidy Iddings and Whitney Burns each connected on one hit.
Covington is now 12-7 and will travel to Milton-Union tomorrow for a critical TRC match-up.
