COVINGTON – Covington hosted Riverside on Tuesday and faced one of the top pitchers in the TRC, Alaina Snow, but the Lady Buccs managed to take advantage of opportunities that led to a 10-2 victory.
Riverside scored a run in the top of the first and Covington responded with two runs in the bottom half of the inning to take a 2-1 lead.
The Lady Buccs scored two more runs in the second to take a 4-1 lead, but Riverside held Covington in check through the next three innings and scored a run in the fourth to cut the deficit to 4-2.
In the bottom of the sixth, Covington broke the game open by plating six runs thanks to big hits by Mara Newhouse and Karyanne Turner. Meg Rogers and the Lady Bucc defense closed out the contest by recording the outs needed to preserve and impressive 10-2 win.
Covington tallied 9 hits and surrendered 5 to the Pirates. Nigella Reck continued her unbelievable hot streak by going 2-for-2 with a home run and two RBI despite being walked twice intentionally.
Mara Newhouse went 2-for-3 with 2 RBI, while Karyanne Turner went 2-for-4 with 3 RBI and Maggie Anderson went 2-for-4 with 2 RBI.
Whitney Burns, Meg Rogers, Taylor Foutz and Erika Gostomsky also recorded hits for Covington.
Erika Gostomsky and Meg Rogers put forth stellar efforts in the circle. Gostomsky went five innings and struck out five batters to pick up the win, while Rogers tossed the last two innings with four strikeouts and allowing just one hit.
Covington improves its record to 7-2 overall and 3-1 in the TRC. Next up for the Lady Buccs is a road contest against Greenville tomorrow (Wednesday).
