COVINGTON – Covington dropped its second straight contest by one run as the Lady Buccs fell to Russia 4-3 on Saturday.
Coming off of a 9-8 loss to Milton-Union, the Lady Buccs were looking to rebound against a talented Russia team, but three errors led to three unearned runs for the visitors and eight runners stranded for Covington proved to be its downfall.
Covington connected on 11 hits, but managed to score three runs – one in the first, one in the third and one in the fifth inning.
Russia took a 3-1 lead into the bottom of the third and Covington was able to tie the score at 3-3 after five innings. The Raiders scored the winning run in the sixth.
Nigella Reck and Mara Newhouse combined for six of the 11 hits by Covington with three hits each, while Karyanne Turner had two hits. Maggie Anderson, Kamryn Barnes and Meg Rogers recorded a hit each.
The big hit of the day for Covington came off the bat of Nigella Reck, who connected on her sixth home run of the season.
Meg Rogers went the distance in the circle and allowed just six hits, one walk and one earned run. She struck out five batters as well.
The Lady Buccs fall to 5-2 on the season and will host Bethel on Monday.
