WEST MILTON – The Covington Lady Buccs captured their sixth straight victory by recording a comeback 6-5 victory over Milton-Union in eight innings.
Milton-Union started the game on fire by scoring three runs in the bottom of the first inning, but Covington was able to battle back with a run in the second and another run in the third. The Lady Buccs tied the game at 3-3 with another run in the top of the fifth inning, but Milton-Union reclaimed a 5-3 lead with two runs in the bottom half of the inning.
Covington then tied the game at 5-5 with two runs in the top of the sixth and the game went into extra innings after neither team could score in the seventh inning. A key for Covington in the bottom of the seventh was preventing Milton from scoring after loading the bases.
The Lady Buccs were able to score a run in the top of the eighth inning and then made some great plays to the bottom half of the inning to secure the win.
Emalyn Johnson made two great plays in center field, first on a diving catch she made from a line drive down the middle. Then, after Milton-Union was able to connect on a hit to put a runner at first, Emalyn Johnson scooped up a line drive up the middle that bounced into the air and she threw the runner out at second base for the second out. The final out came on a strikeout thrown by Cassidy Iddings.
Cassidy Iddings picked up the win in the circle after entering into the game with one out left in the fifth inning. Whitney Burns pitched well too and the duo combined to strike out eight batters and allowed eight hits.
Offensively, Covington racked up nine hits with two home runs being drilled by Emalyn Johnson and Ava Hartwig. Emalyn Johnson also connected on a triple that bounced off the fence in center field.
Covington is now 13-7 overall and 6-3 in the TRC with a home game scheduled on Friday against Lehman.
