COVINGTON – The Covington Lady Buccs captured their 20th win of the season and advanced to the third round of the state tournament with a 10-0 victory over Houston on Thursday.

The Lady Buccs will face either Botkins or Pleasant Hill on Tuesday. May 14th.

In the bottom of the first inning the Lady Buccs loaded the bases with no outs and took advantage of the opportunity by scoring five runs. Covington then scored four runs in the bottom of the second to take a 9-0 lead with two of the big hits coming on home runs by freshmen Ava Hartwig and Emalyn Johnson.

Covington continued pounding the ball hard over the next two innings, but the majority of them went directly to Houston defenders that led to two scoreless innings.

The Lady Buccs were able to return to the plate in the bottom of the fifth by holding on to a 9-0 lead thanks to the outstanding performances of senior pitcher Karyanne Turner and the defense behind her.

Elizabeth Coblentz then led off to start the bottom of the fifth and crushed a walk-off home run in center field to end the game.

Overall, Covington tallied 10 hits with Ava Hartwig, Emalyn Johnson and Elizabeth Coblentz all recording two hits. All three connected on home runs and Hartwig also hit a double.
