COVINGTON – The Covington Lady Buccs advanced to 3-0 with a narrow 7-5 victory over Ansonia on Thursday.

The game wasn’t at the high level the Lady Buccs are accustomed playing, but at least the end result was a victory on the scoreboard.

The reason, for the third straight game of the season, the Lady Buccs trailed on the scoreboard early in the game as Ansonia put two runs across the plate in the top of the first.

Offensively, the Lady Buccs struggled at the plate early on through the first two innings due to taking so many strikeouts by looking instead of swinging.

And, after trailing 2-0 heading into the bottom of the third, Covington coach Brooke Gostomsky-Menker lit up the team by expressing the importance of staying focused on connecting on the pitches that enter the strike zone. The Lady Buccs responded in the bottom of the third by scoring three runs, but unfortunately left the inning with the bases loaded.

Ansonia tied the score at 3-3 with a run in the top of the fifth, but the Lady Buccs were able to respond with two runs in the bottom of the inning to take a 5-3 lead.

Covington then pushed its lead to 7-3 with two more runs in the sixth, but things got too intense as Ansonia was able to put itself in potential for a possible comeback victory in the top of the seventh. Fortunately, Covington was able to hold on for a victory despite two more runs being scored by the Lady Tigers in the final inning.

Overall, Ansonia outhit the Lady Buccs eight to seven. Covington also committed two errors to just one for Ansonia, so the victory was a fortunate situation due to the overall stats.

Now 3-0, the Lady Buccs will need to take their execution to a much higher level as they travel to Greenville on Saturday to face two outstanding teams, Tri-Village and Greenville.
