COVINGTON – In what was a huge battle against a long-time rival, the Covington Lady Buccs built a 4-0 lead, but came up short down the stretch in a 9-6 loss to Miami East.
It was apparent that the Lady Buccs had high energy in the start of the game as they scored four runs in the first inning and held a 4-0 lead heading into the third inning against Miami East, who hasn’t lost a league game so far this season.
The Lady Vikings scored two runs in the third and two more in the fourth to tie the game at 4-4 and then doubled up the score with four more runs in the top of the fifth.
Covington responded in the bottom Hal of the fifth as Elizabeth Coblentz connected on a home run to cap two more runs on the board to close the gap to 8-6.
Unfortunately, that was the last run Covington could score the rest of the game and Miami East put one more run across the plate in the top of the seventh inning to take a 9-6 lead.
The Lady Buccs did have an opportunity to possibly keep the game going in the bottom of the seventh as they put two runners on base with just one out. Unfortunately, a powerful fly ball deep in the outfield came up short from clearing the fence, which Miami East caught, and then a strikeout ended the game.
Covington’s record drops to 7-7 overall and 3-3 in the TRC. The Lady Buccs play a double-header on Saturday at home against Piqua.
