CASSTOWN – A critical TRC contest against Miami East closed out extremely frustrating for the Lady Buccs as they lost 21-11 in six innings.

The Lady Buccs hurt themselves due to so many unfortunate errors in the field that gave Miami East extra opportunities to score several runs. The Lady Vikings took advantage of the mistakes, which led to a walk-away victory.

Covington started off the first inning with two runs due to a home run by Emalyn Johnson and the defense played well early to take a 2-0 lead.

Miami East was able to take 3-2 lead after three innings due to a run in the second and two more in the third, but the Lady Buccs respond well offensively by scoring four runs in the top of the fourth to take a 6-3 lead.

Unfortunately, Covington hindered itself in the bottom of the fourth inning that allowed Miami East to score nine runs for a 12-6 lead. One of the critical situations that prevented the Lady Buccs from closing out the inning with a 6-5 lead was an error. Miami East then erupted with seven more runs to put the Lady Buccs into tough circumstances.

Once again, Covington battled back thanks to a home run by Ava Hartwig in the top of the fifth. The Lady Buccs then closed the gap to 12-11 with one out and the bases loaded, but Miami East was able to make two straight defensive plays to eliminate more damage.

This reignited Miami East as the Lady Vikings erupted once again by scoring seven more runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to take a 19-11 lead. The big hit was a grand slam home run by freshman Caitlin Howell.

Covington wasn’t able to recover from the deficit as the Lady Buccs failed to score in the top of the sixth and Miami East closed out the game with two more runs in the bottom half of the inning.

Overall, Miami East had 15 hits and no errors, while Covington had 10 hits and five errors.

The loss drops Covington’s record to 7-2 overall and 2-1 in the TRC. Fortunately the Lady Buccs will face Miami East once again this season.
