COVINGTON – The Covington Lady Buccs took care of business in the tournament opener on Wednesday in a 24-1 victory over Springfield Catholic Central.
The next tournament game for the Lady Buccs is scheduled next Monday against either Fort Loramie or Cedarville.
The Lady Buccs dominated from start to finish by scoring four runs in the first, 13 in the second, six in the third and one more in the bottom of the fourth. A credit goes to the Covington coaching staff for keeping the entire roster focused and holding up runners on bases in certain situations to not pile up more runs. The runs scored were mostly due to overall effort.
Covington racked up 16 hits and drew nine walks and held SCC to no hits. The one miscue by the Lady Buccs was the four walks surrendered and a passed ball that led to the lone run scored by SCC in the top of the fourth inning.
Jayda McClure went 4-for-4 with a home run, 3 RBIs and five runs scored and Elizabeth Coblentz went 3-for-3 with a grand slam, 6 RBIs and 4 runs scored. Plus, Emalyn Johnson drilled a home run on two of her hits and drove in 4 runs.
As a team, the Lady Buccs now have 42 home runs throughout the season.
Overall, nine of the Lady Buccs connected on hits and 12 of them scored runs.
Whitney Burns and Jayda McClure combined to record a no-hitter.
Covington is now 17-9.
