COVINGTON – The Covington Buccaneers hosted Yellow Springs in the opening game of the state tournament and captured an impressive 10-0 win in five innings.

The Buccaneers scored four runs in the first inning, which started with a double by Ashton Skaggs and he then scored the first run. Two more runs were scored on an error and Tyler Palsgrove drove in another runner on a sacrifice.

Three more runs were put on the board by the Buccs in the bottom of the second with the two biggest contacts being a sacrifice fly by Ashton Skaggs that scored Hunter McMillion and a single by Tanner Palsgrove that drove in Tyler Jay. Brairen Denson also scored to put the Buccs up 7-0.

The Buccaneers pushed their lead to 8-0 with a run in the third scored by Colton Goins and then the game ended in the bottom of the fifth on runs score by Tanner Palsgrove and Tyler Palsgrove.

Tyler Jay threw a two-hitter on the mound as he struck out four batters and walked just one. The defense behind him played error-free.

The Buccaneers wrapped up nine hits with Tanner Palsgrove and Brairen Denson both connecting on two hits each. Hunter McMillion, Caiden Hollingsworth and Ashton Skaggs drove in two runs each, while Tanner Palsgrove, Colton Goins, Brairen Denson and Tyler Jay all stole multiple bases. A total of 13 bases were stolen by the Buccs throughout the game.

The victory improves Covington’s record to 13-10.

The next tournament game for the Buccaneers is against top seeded Dayton Christian on Wednesday, May 28th at Honaker Field in Miamisburg, The game starts at 5:00pm.
